As a compromise between the two, I sometimes use an air fryer. This cuts down on the grease that you&#8217;d get with deep frying, and the crust still comes out crispy and perfect every time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-ingredients\">Ingredients<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The ingredient common to all hand pies is pie crust.<\/strong> I either make my own or buy a high-quality crust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use whatever filling you&#8217;d like &#8211; jam, chutney, relish, or your favorite pie filling. You&#8217;ll need 1 tablespoon of filling per hand pie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-light-pink-background-color has-background\"><em>Note:<\/em> I love to use a cranberry relish (technically, it&#8217;s my aunt&#8217;s recipe) full of cranberries, orange peel, walnuts, and sugar. This filling is sweet, tart, tangy, and perfect for fall and winter. I share it in the recipe below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-it-s-made\">How It&#8217;s Made<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Start by rolling out pie crust to 1\/8 inch thickness and cutting it into 3 inch circles. The best way to do this is to use the tines of a fork to press the dough closed around the entire border.<\/li><li><strong>Cut a few slits<\/strong> into the top of the dough before baking. This lets the steam out so your hand pies don&#8217;t explode in (and all over) the oven or fryer.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-you-need-a-special-pie-crust\">Do You Need a Special Pie Crust?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>You can use any pie crust for this recipe.<\/strong> Either make your own or buy one at a store.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My current favorite crust is from BraveTart&#8217;s new cookbook. It is without a doubt the best pie crust that I&#8217;ve ever made and it&#8217;s all butter and doesn&#8217;t use vodka. It&#8217;s different from a cranberry sauce in that the cranberries aren&#8217;t cooked down; it&#8217;s made by food processing cranberries with oranges, nuts, and sugar. It&#8217;s a perfect filling for these pies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking for another flavor option, try one of these:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Jam<\/strong> &#8211; Jam makes this easy recipe even easier. Use a spoonful of your favorite jam (you could even use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cupcakeproject.com\/homemade-tart-cranberry-jam-in-ten\/\">cranberry jam<\/a>) and you are good to go.<\/li><li><strong>Apple pie filling<\/strong> &#8211; Try the filling I use in my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cupcakeproject.com\/crumb-topping-for-apple-pie\/\">apple crumble pie<\/a>.
