Or, just think of it as its own special treat because there really is nothing quite like it.

They are similar to gingerbread cookies, but made with ground almonds and flavored heavily with cinnamon. They are chewy on the inside and very crispy on the outside, simple to make, and glazed plainly with egg whites and sugar.

These classic German cinnamon stars are a sweet and delicious treat that’s perfect to serve around the holidays!

I learned this Zimtsterne recipe from Lilly of Lilly’s German Bakery. It’s a family favorite that she grew up with and I was so excited to get to bake this authentic recipe together with her in my St. Louis kitchen.

They are simple to make, and once you try my recipe, you’ll never look back!

Did you know that Biscoff stands for “biscuit” plus “coffee”? You can drink coffee with them, dip them in milk, or just eat them plain. You can’t go wrong!

Ingredients

These cookies are made entirely with pantry basics. What makes them special is the blend of spices. I updated the recipe (December, 2020) with new spice measurements after several people said the spices weren’t quite strong enough. I think the new amounts are perfect and I hope you’ll agree. I use a blend of cinnamon and nutmeg with just a touch of cloves and cardamom.

Homemade Cinnamon Chips https://www.cupcakeproject.com/pumpkin-pie-spice-chips-perfect-for/ https://www.cupcakeproject.com/pumpkin-pie-spice-chips-perfect-for/#comments Fri, 13 Nov 2020 20:56:10 +0000 http://gw.finelimedesigns.com/2012/09/pumpkin-pie-spice-chips-perfect-for-fall-baking-3/ Cinnamon chips add a wonderful cinnamon flavor to muffins, scones, and cookies. They can also be hard to find in the store.

The good news is that with just a few ingredients you can make them yourself! Bonus – they only take a few minutes to prep.

The texture of the homemade version is a little different from the ones you can buy. The store-bought chips [paid link] are smooth, almost waxy, while mine have a texture that more closely resembles wet sand. When they are melted in baked goods, they remain a little coarse (but it’s not unpleasant).
