I think you can do a direct substitution, but yes, the texture isn’t the exactly the same as other nuts, so there may be some differences.

I have used hemp hearts for some time in many dished and baked goods but just curious as to a ratio…like if a recipe called for a 1/2 cup of walnuts would you substitute them with a 1/2 cup of hemp hearts? I just want to substitute rather than just add…I did this the other night when baking a Keto Oatmeal cookie…and it turned out nicely…but texture slightly off, so I may have to revisit this and alter some of my ingredients.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

What? You’ve never had a hemp crust? I only feign surprise. Most people haven’t tried hemp crust or a hemp milk custard like the one that fills my hemp tarts in cupcake wrappers. The reason why stems back to a misunderstanding about hemp that I addressed in my post on hemp seeds. […]

Hi Sue… I wish I could help with this. I can say that I wouldn’t recommend using only hemp as a flour replacement. But, I’m not quite sure what to recommend in your case. What about this blend? https://www.thefoodieaffair.com/low-carb-baking-mix/

I am allergic to Almonds, so almond flour or other “nut” flours are out. I have tried using coconut flour exclusively and found that doesn’t work, as baked items are too dry and do not rise. If I could figure out how to use coconut flour so the recipe comes out moist and rises that would be perfect! Or the right combination of liquid that needs to be added to exclusive coconut flour recipes. Recently I have been looking at hemp as a flour source. In your article above you say it is a good nut replacement, but don’t mention it as a flour source. Would ground hemp hearts work and give the desired result? And would it be a 1-1 replacement for regular flour?
I have used ground flax seeds before, but do not think using it by itself is something I can do, as it has a laxative effect on my family. I do however think that it could be added to other flour sources in a mix that could be used in “everyday” type baking. But do not know how to figure the correct amounts of each flour source to make up a mix. If I could figure out how to use coconut flour so the recipe comes out moist and rises that would be perfect. Any advise you can give me is much appreciated and I thank you in advance.

Actually that would only harm the nutrients in the crust – most of the bread will not reach that temperature, a “done” loaf of bread is about 190*F inside.

Oven temp I use is 345 F. So I guess the nutritional value will suffer (from my reading of previous comments about best temp to use)? I’ll save further use for smoothies or cereal.

Thank you for this. I love adding Hemp seeds to, well, everything. Cookies, Muffins, salads, bread, sandwhich toppings, you name it. I have had some questionable looks when I said my toddlers love Hemp seeds…. No, I am not getting my kids high – I’m keeping them healthy!
