This cake is just as rich as its buttery peers, more moist, and doesn’t leave you with the same heavy feeling.

Along with the tart pucker of oranges, this cake is lightly spiced and is made with an additional sweet splash of vanilla.

I brought this cake to my book club and as they collectively tasted the cake, the group of outspoken women was left speechless for several moments. To say it was hit would be an understatement.

Besan Laddu https://www.cupcakeproject.com/laddu-gluten-free-indian-cookie-that/ https://www.cupcakeproject.com/laddu-gluten-free-indian-cookie-that/#comments Mon, 22 Jun 2020 18:51:00 +0000 http://gw.finelimedesigns.com/2012/01/laddu-a-gluten-free-indian-cookie-that-doesnt-require-an-oven-3/ Laddu is a must-try Indian sweet! While there are many versions, I love besan laddu (the chickpea flour gluten-free variety) flavored with honey, orange, cardamom, and a touch of nutmeg.

The laddus have a Mexican wedding cookie-like texture. They are hard on the outside, but they crumble in your mouth as if you were eating a ball of refrigerated cookie dough.

Candied Orange Slices https://www.cupcakeproject.com/candied-cuties/ https://www.cupcakeproject.com/candied-cuties/#comments Mon, 03 Feb 2020 16:35:30 +0000 https://www.cupcakeproject.com/?p=18826 Candied orange slices are are super sticky, tart, and sweet enough to fill your sugar craving. They are wonderful for snacking or as a garnish for your favorite citrus desserts.

How to Make Candied Orange Slices

  1. Wash your oranges really well and slice the oranges into thin circle slices. Set aside the end pieces or any other pieces that don’t look that pretty.
  2. Boil the orange slices with sugar and spices. I like using cinnamon sticks, but you can also add whole cloves, nutmeg, and/or allspice. Squeeze the juice from any of the pieces you set aside into the boiling sugar water for extra flavor.
  3. Simmer for about forty minutes, rotating occasionally.
  4. Using tongs, transfer candied slices to a cooling rack. (To keep your counter clean, put a paper towel under the rack.) Save the orange syrup left in the pot to use on pancakes or anywhere else you would use orange sauce.
  5. As soon as the orange slices are cool, transfer them to parchment paper. If you leave them on the cooling rack too long, it will be hard to remove them.

Chewy vs. Crispy Orange Slices

To make candied orange slices crispy, use a dehydrator to dehydrate them after they are done – just like when you make crispy apple chips.

Orange Buttercream Frosting – Sweet and Tangy https://www.cupcakeproject.com/orange-buttercream-frosting-recipe/ https://www.cupcakeproject.com/orange-buttercream-frosting-recipe/#comments Thu, 30 Jan 2020 19:07:00 +0000 http://gw.finelimedesigns.com/2008/06/buttercream-frosting-recipe-orange-frosting-3/ This orange frosting is irresistibly sweet and tangy. It’s an easy buttercream recipe with a bold orange flavor from fresh orange zest.

Orange frosting on vanilla cupcakes

Ingredients

Like all of my American buttercreams, this one requires unsalted butter, powdered sugar, and salt. The key ingredient that makes this frosting stand out is orange zest.

I’ve tried making orange frosting using orange marmalade, orange juice, and orange extract. But, I’ve found that using zest is by far the best method for flavoring the frosting.

Orange Curd https://www.cupcakeproject.com/orange-curd-sweetened-with-honey/ https://www.cupcakeproject.com/orange-curd-sweetened-with-honey/#comments Wed, 18 Dec 2019 22:55:32 +0000 https://www.cupcakeproject.com/?p=19801 This orange curd recipe is like a taste of sunshine. Orange curd is smooth and creamy and thick enough to spread over toast. Plus, it’s easy to make using very basic ingredients.

Honey-Sweetened Orange Curd

What is Orange Curd?

Lemon curd is by far the most popular type of fruit curd. However, curd can be made with so many types of fruit – I love making banana curd, carrot curd, and even mojito curd.

Orange Pie Recipe https://www.cupcakeproject.com/spiced-orange-chiffon-pie/ https://www.cupcakeproject.com/spiced-orange-chiffon-pie/#comments Wed, 13 Nov 2019 17:54:11 +0000 https://www.cupcakeproject.com/?p=24509 Orange pie has a fresh, bright flavor and a lovely gingersnap crust. Contributor Jessica Touchette makes hers as a light, fluffy chiffon pie and adds some winter spices.

Orange pie
If you’re looking to up your pie game this holiday season, this orange pie is the way to go. The unbaked filling consists of a flavored egg yolk and gelatin base that thickens the pie the way cornstarch does in a cream pie.

Meringue or cream lightens and supports the flavored mixture, turning what would otherwise be a thick custard into a light and silky confection.

Easy Orange Sauce https://www.cupcakeproject.com/grand-marnier-syrup-recipe/ https://www.cupcakeproject.com/grand-marnier-syrup-recipe/#comments Thu, 25 Apr 2019 20:55:00 +0000 http://gw.finelimedesigns.com/2009/03/grand-marnier-syrup-recipe-3/ Orange sauce is sweet, tangy, and a perfect topping for waffles and pancakes. I also love it drizzled over desserts like cake and ice cream. Make it with orange juice or add Grand Marnier for a more grown-up version.

Chocolate Orange Cheesecake https://www.cupcakeproject.com/chocolate-glazed-orange-cheesecakes/ https://www.cupcakeproject.com/chocolate-glazed-orange-cheesecakes/#comments Fri, 29 Mar 2019 19:27:06 +0000 https://www.cupcakeproject.com/?p=19505 This chocolate orange cheesecake has a bright citrus flavor that pairs perfectly with its chocolate Oreo crust. The texture is just the way that I like cheesecake – not too heavy and not super light and fluffy.

Cuddrireddra – The Cookie Recipe Worth A Four Year Wait https://www.cupcakeproject.com/cuddrireddra-cookie-recipe-worth-four/ https://www.cupcakeproject.com/cuddrireddra-cookie-recipe-worth-four/#comments Fri, 17 Sep 2010 01:52:00 +0000 http://gw.finelimedesigns.com/2010/09/cuddrireddra-the-cookie-recipe-worth-a-four-year-wait-3/

Orange, red wine, and cinnamon come together in cuddrireddra, an Italian deep fried cookie that resembles a biscotti in texture. Don’t let the frying scare you off. Everyone was surprised to hear that the cuddrireddra were deep fried – unlike donuts or funnel cake, they are not at all greasy. The cuddrireddra have a respectable crunch without being rock hard and the flavor is unique but comforting at the same time – like the smell of home cooked food that sometimes fills the hallways of apartment buildings.

One taster couldn’t help but remark over and over again that cuddrireddra are much better than chocolate chip cookies. It’s no surprise that she felt that way; cuddrireddra are the cookies that were worth tracking down for four years.

Don’t Throw Away Your Citrus Rinds – Dry and Save Them For Recipes That Call for Zest https://www.cupcakeproject.com/dont-throw-away-your-citrus-rinds-dry/ https://www.cupcakeproject.com/dont-throw-away-your-citrus-rinds-dry/#comments Wed, 15 Sep 2010 23:54:00 +0000 http://gw.finelimedesigns.com/2010/09/dont-throw-away-your-citrus-rinds-dry-and-save-them-for-recipes-that-call-for-zest-3/ Removing the rinds from citrus fruits you’re juicing and preserving the rinds in powder form helps to eliminate food waste and also guarantees that you’ll always have citrus flavoring on hand for recipes!

I can’t believe the number of citrus fruit rinds that I’ve discarded because I didn’t know about this trick.

Now, when I have oranges in the house for snacking, lemons for seasoning fish, or limes for a tangy rice, I will dry and powder their rinds. No longer will I need to make a special trip to the market for just a touch of citrus flavor.
