Or, just think of it as its own special treat because there really is nothing quite like it.

Pear Cake https://www.cupcakeproject.com/pear-cake/ https://www.cupcakeproject.com/pear-cake/#comments Fri, 20 Nov 2020 14:49:18 +0000 https://www.cupcakeproject.com/?p=24257 This pear cake pays homage to all the tastes that my family loves. It’s a sweet honey cake with wine-soaked poached pears, sliced almonds, and a love of baking that has been passed down through the generations.

Pear Cake

I grew up eating rustic, unfrosted cakes that got their flavor from fruit and nuts – think apple cake with fresh apples on top, banana cake (which I now make as banana cupcakes), and walnut sour cream coffee cake. We had an ever-present honey jar and Dad would sometimes forgo cake entirely for toasted nuts drenched in honey.

While we never had this particular pear cake, it tastes like home.

It has a delicate almond flavor that pairs so well with its tart berry jam and my salted honey crust. It’s wonderful for breakfast, but also as a dessert or snack any time of day.

I love how it’s simple enough for a Sunday morning treat, but impressive enough to serve for company.

Native Americans have been grinding acorns into flour and using the flour to make hearty stews and breads for hundreds of years – and you can too!

Are Acorns Edible

Yes! Acorns are edible. However, before eating one, you’ll need to remove, or leach out, the tannins. Not only is there is the possibility that the tannins could give you an upset stomach, they also taste like dish soap.

Once the tannins are removed, you can turn the acorns into flour or dry them and roast them to eat like other nuts.
